Hello,

I am using gentoo since several years at my personal computers and servers.
Because portage matches the requirements needed for highly customized software
installations on clusters I would like to use it there, too. The software to be installed
ranges from the actual eclipse version to numerical libraries.
Unfortunately the clusters come with a vendor system which normally is not gentoo and cannot be changed.

I tried to install portage as a second package manager in userspace.
This is not as easy as I tought because there are a lot of paths to be changed.

I would be happy if anybody could give me some hints, links were I can find information about porting portage to
other unix systems or about modifications to run it as a normal user.

Regards

Hello,

Thanks for your very fast response. :D

I already searched the web and the gentoo-portage-dev mailing list archive.
Gentoo prefix seems very good. Will help me a lot :-)

The problem about portage installation in my special case is that the whole portage system
has to be installed under another directory structure because the base system cannot be touched.

I have to install portage under /opt/portage with all stuff: binaries, libraries, scripts, config files, caches, ...
and all software packages must later be installed under /opt/app1 /opt/app2 ...
Portage will run as a special "opt" user which is not root

The trouble occures when trying to configure the system with these paths.
I had a look on the python scripts and it seems to me that paths are hard coded in portage?
So maybe the task is a littel bit clearer...
