Hi, I've been following the instructions from jannik2099 on github for installing Gentoo on the Pinebook Pro, as well as the amd64 installation manual.
I think I've done everything right, except the system won't boot. The thing is, I checked my boot partition and I'm missing a couple files, namely Image and Image.gz.
These are the Linux kernels, right? I copied those two files from my Manjaro install and it boots into the splash screen but never finishes (that's ok), so I know that's at least one of the problems. The Pinebook pro uses u-boot, not grub, so I don't think that's the problem. My question is:
"Where do the Image and Image.gz files in /boot come from, and what do you recommend I do?"

rjraymond,

Welcome to Gentoo.

You must use Image as arm64 does not support compressed kernel files.
Those files come from the kernel build.
They will be in arch/arm64/boot

Borrowing Manjaros files may work if you also borrow the matching /lib/modules/ so that you have the modules that match the kernel.

Dang, that was fast. I'm going to have to reinstall Gentoo to test that out. Thank you so much!

Oh, just because I have since installed KDE-plasma so that I can use the pinebook pro normally. How considerate of you! You know, I would really recommend it, it's a fantastic little machine. https://store.pine64.org/?post_type=product

rjraymond,

I'm an ex-displays engineer. The only thing that puts me off it the thought of a less than pixel perfect display.
I know from my displays days, I could not live with that.

I know why its done and I understand the commercial rational. Its just not for for for that one reason.
I would pay more for a Pinebook Pro with a pixel perfect display but I suspect that not many others would.
