My VPN provider is now offering Wireguard as an alternative to OpenVPN. They say it's safer and more secure.
What say my Gentoo Gurus?

It is faster, that's for sure, but more secure is debatable, openvpn is well vetted and has tons of options. Wireguard is relatively new with much less options. I use it personally and liking it.

Depends on what you want.
I find wg more dependable than openvpn. E.g. openvpn aims to be as reliable as the medium underneath, which works to some extent.
Wiregueard is as reliable all as all the media you can use. Transferring a live ssh session over to another ISP can be useful.

Imagine running an ansible playbook through a stepping stone with a forwarded ssh agent. With screen, chances are I'd be able to recover using a symlink, but it takes more time and effort than just waiting out the freeze between losing one connection and activating an emergency hotspot. Yeah... Happened to me. More than once, actually.
The downside is that wireguard doesn't handle dynamic IP/dynamic routes very well. I suppose you could do that manually, but it's way easier if you know your stuff in advance and just put it in a static config file.
