Hi, I would like to get your input about which mice do you recommend using for Gentoo, and games in particular.

I am thinking about the newer Razer mice, but I also am aware of the fact that there aren't necessarily drivers which can be used in Gentoo. So you might get stuck with certain DPI and sensitivity and no way to change it below a threshold. This has happened to me already when switching from Windows, and wouldn't like to happen again.

Zowie fk2 for me is doing its job. You can configure basically everything you need from the hardware (mouse) itself; no extra bloat needed ever.
Once done with the configuration via hardware, all left is getting yourself the right sensitivity/accel via DE and/or game.

Configuring via hardware: https://benqesupport.blob.core.windows.net/esupport/Gaming%20Gear%20Product/UserManual/EC1-A/UM_ML_181207092710.pdf or just check a youtube tutorial.

Another vote for the MX518. I currently go between a G400s and an MX510 and they're very comfortable and well built. All three use the same geometry. I have a G500 at work (same shape but different buttons) and don't like it nearly as much.

I don't know if it's changed much, but Razer has had a reputation for low quality. I personally had a Deathadder mouse that lasted less than a year before the wheel stopped working, and I've heard other people online with similar stories. That said, always take online complaints with a grain of salt.

I actually had that exact one! back in the day. Ended up going back to the smaller ones though: MX300 and MX310.

Hmmm. That is actually pretty cool, although one would think that software drivers can provide more functionality. Is Zowie the only brand that allows you to do this?

My Razer Deathadder Elite works great. The drivers don't allow you remap keys, only to change the rgb, but you can use xmodmap for that. Once you have the drivers installed and loaded, the sensitivity buttons change the dpi and give you a popup onscreen to tell you what setting you have just invoked. Highly recommended. I used Roccat mice for a few years and they had full-featured drivers that let you save profiles and remap. Not sure if they're still available, as Roccat was bought out by....I forget whom.

Been using Microsoft mice as they're the only ambidextrous layout I know of with 5 buttons. Would prefer not to any more, their build quality's gone to hell.

That's good. Honestly I don't even need to change the RGB (I don't even need the RGB) but it feels always better to know that you have a way to make the device work.
I assume that with drivers, you are referring to "openrazer" ...?

Correct. There's an overlay for it and everything.

If you're looking for something ambidextrous with a similar shape and layout to the legendary Microsoft Intellimouse (I was, and it took me a while to find one), I highly recommend the SteelSeries Sensei 310. Build quality excellent, sensor fantastic, no gimmicky bollocks or strange shapes (besides the RGB, which can be turned off). Configuration utility (rivalcfg) in the jorgicio overlay.

Gotta say I'm RGB agnostic, I gravitate towards something really small ("laptop" mouse like legendary Logitech mini mouse). I had a look at the OpenRazer repo and saw that they have a merge request for a Viper Mini. If that gets to work, I think it's a no brainer. Hell if I knew s*** about s*** I'd even try to do the changes myself. Sounds like fun tinkering.

I can second the Zowie FK2. I have been using mine since around 2017, and it works great in whatever I plug it into, including its primary home of my Gentoo PC.
