Hello Gentoo RPI People,

There is update for raspbian that enables booting pi4 from usb.
(this update should be noob proof, on raspbian)
How does that work on genpi64?

General video and internet search offers simple steps
update system, change a word in some file, (/etc/default/rpi-eeprom-update)
install eeprom and run it with a path to another file. (/lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader/beta/pieeprom-2020-05-15.bin)

I am looking at my system, and that another file is already there.
$ ls /lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader/beta/pieeprom-2020-05-15.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 512K May 24 09:31 /lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader/beta/pieeprom-2020-05-15.bin

old tutorials speak of changing additional third file (/boot/cmdline.txt)

last part is to copy live sd to ssd,
and all tutorals use that raspbian gui sd card copier,
and i do not have that, how about cli variant?
does one use cp or dd or something else?

(i have pi4 4gb version)

Thank you

well, i made it...

From here
https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/hardware/raspberrypi/bcm2711_bootloader_config.md
I followed 'BETA setup instructions'.

so first i had to do usb-storage.quirk as explained here:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=245931
and than procceded with rpi-eeprom update thing.

Still on sd, I updated *.elf *.dat files (in /boot/) from rpi git:
https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware

(here i tested, i took sd out and put it in usb card reader, and plugged that in usb port of rpi and booted. it booted.)

next on pc, I made backup.img of my sd, than dd that backup.img on ssd.
I used gparted to extend the last partition to rest of ssd's storage space.

I took ssd, plugged it into blue usb port of rpi and booted. no sd card. I am running rpi from usb ssd.

Thank is all thank you
