Tbh this is an unnecessary post but I feel like telling everybody what happens, if you do not have this kernel option set to yes.
I have installed a new Gentoo system and wondered why grub loaded but booting just sat there with loading kernel ... and nothing.
Not only did the kernel just sit there, I obviously sat on my head too.
I booted with Gentoo Minimal CD countless times, reinstalling grub, checking on grub.cfg; by now I know the commands before chroot and after that by heart
which is odd because usually I have to look up every command.
After a few hours I´ve about had it and just searched the forums until I found several postings with the same issue that offered a solution so simple as the efi framebuffer
that you need when riding nvidia card in the box.
And I tried it again, make menuconfig, and hey, CONFIG_FB_SIMPLE was unset. I recompiled the kernel with it set and the kernel booted.

I´ve installed countless Gentoo systems since I found my way to Gentoo and yet overlooked such a trivial setting that turns out to be essential for success.

Thank you for your patience and be safe.

transsib,

Thank you for sharing your learning experance.

It booted without CONFIG_FB_SIMPLE too but your console was using black text on a black background.
That's difficult to read.

You can say that, Neddy.
While I´m at it I need to thank everyone who worked on the Gentoo Minimal iso, a masterpiece.

FB_SIMPLE was apparently needed for your system, but it is not always needed. My system works fine with an AMD card, in both console KMS mode and Xorg KMS mode, with FB_SIMPLE=n. Even so, enabling an option like that is a good speculative measure for anyone having problems, and it's easier to remove unnecessary features once you have a working system than to debug blindly.

I use efifb to boot my nvidia system. Never used fb_simple. I wonder if that would work for you, as well.

Maybe you and bammbamm808 have X86_SYSFB off and transsib has it on. If it is on, then the "standard" drivers like efifb cannot work and you need fb_simple in order to have console output otherwise you will only get output when Xorg runs.

I have X86_SYSFB=y, and the Linux text console works fine for me. It is the high resolution KMS text console, not the classic VGA text console.

Driver efifb was set. But SIMPLE_FB was needed to get output here.
Any Radeon/AMD system has different requirements, in some situations less bitchy.
I was afraid it was sth worse. Glad it was just this "triviality" and not any hassle with EFI boot like
I remembered when setting up my first EFI booting system years ago. Which is also reason for gratefulness for
the Gentoo Minimal Install Live CD. Working with it makes it easier and no trouble with EFI booting of install media.

On a sidenote X86_SYSFB was also set to yes but it wasn´t necessary. No console output without SIMPLE_FB.
