Our email/web server at work died (hardware failure) and I scrambled to put the RAID controller and drives into a temporary computer until we can build a new one. Only problem, the new host's motherboard can't boot to a GPT drive. So I grabbed another drive, partitioned it with cfdisk, made a couple ext4 filesystems, installed a stage3, built grub, and installed it to the new disk's MBR. After rebooting, the email server was back up and running. Ugly hack, I know, but it only needs to work for a short time.

Not many other Linux distribution's installer CDs would let you do this. Thanks again Gentoo!

Gentoo is really hard to break. You can fix it most of time, but it also depends on how much experience you have operating Linux. I recently broke my system by turning on a dangerous USE flag and since I had no idea what broke I just ended up reinstalling.

Sometimes you can trick an old motherboard into booting GPT - you need to figure out how to shoehorn Lilo into a protective MBR without wiping the GPT (or existing partition table), which takes some experimenting and requires backups, but I've had success at least once.
