Do you think new Ryzens can change that? It's one reason I'm coming back :)

Linux users wised up and don't use Google any more, that's all. Say no to the masters of universe and their ways. Filtering search results and invading your privacy. I haven't used Google for at least 3 years.

Brilliant :)

Now I know that new people also look for info about linux on other search engines.

Anyway, I think there might be renaissance coming. New Ryzen line, Steam on Linux, Windows 10 pissing people off with auto updates, etc.

I've heard that DuckDuckGo is hosted by Amazon and is worse than Google ethically. It's also just a metasearch using other engines - so no real search engine.

There is an open source one - https://www.findx.com
Apparently they partnered with the Brave browser.

Mobile has probably taken a lot of the interest once captured by Linux distributions, which have become a commodity.

maybe they search for mint, or manjaro? ubuntu no longer the king of the hill. also true about the search engines, I use startpage and ddg, google is awful, not just because of ideology and censorship, but the results themselves are too alphabet-centric, sometimes google stuff takes 80% of your screen after search

C1REX,

I think systemd is driving potential users away. :)

The statistic is flawed for lots of reasons. It shows how many searches there were for Linux.
There is a leap of faith that there is a strong correlation between that statistic and the number of Linux users.

How do you count users?
I have about 10 Gentoo installs. Am I one user or 10?

Neddy

I'm aware the statistics are super flawed but that's probably the only thing we've got. Statistics and guessing.

Also this post is to start a discussion :) Not to prove a point. I want to be wrong :)

The word "internet" also falls down on the graph, but this does not mean that people refuse connecting to the internet :D

So what do you think? Linux popularity is growing or dropping?

Depend on what you compare it with, if anything the popularity of PCs in general is probably dropping with people doing everything on phones and tablets.

Good point. I didn't consider that both Linux and Windows might lose popularity at the same time.

Today linux is aboutt 1.9%
https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide

Other years:
2009 - 0.68%
2014 - 1.33%
2020 - 1.9%

So in percentage terms its growing slowly... but MacOs grew in the same years 2009 -2020 - 5% -> 17%.

But the desktop computers base is shrinking.
In 2030 there will be probabaly just phones + keyboard + mouse + monitor/tv.
Ryzens will have 256 thread and desktop will have probabaly less than 10% overall.
Samsung has Dex already and it will be getting better.

Look at Apple Bionic A13 soc, geekbench score 1300 on single thread (2.7Ghz), my ryzen 1700X has only 1060 (3.8Ghz). Apple has probabaly some hardware units to boost score in benchamrks :D, but its still impressive.

My question was so wrong on many levels.

Check this graph out. It's shows a completely different story. All is relative.

It's just searched queries, probabaly ppl just use smartphones mostly for searching and are no looking for phrases like this anymore "windows open zip" or "linux open tar". Ppl are using desktop less frequently so there is less queries.

It may be obvious, but please note that "windows" is not just the name of an operating system; many people could have searched for the transparent things made of glass... :)

So obvious and I didn't think somebody actually may need new windows.

Can you supply more info here about DuckDuckGo? This is sad information, if true.

I found one mention on that site buried behind some javascript, saying that it was formerly open source, with a link that leads to a 404 page.

Here's DDG's open source, for comparison.

Both sites use Bing as a backend.
