Sakaki thanks for the reply.

1. so... since mmal works when called from a 32bit userland, can we talk about a multilib setup? Its most likely similar to what amd64 is doing, but now that I think about it, if mmal plagues ffmpeg, ffmpeg plagues pretty much the entire distro.

2. I didn't know the camera does h264 all on it's own, I thought it's a team effort from mmal, and raspivid. It's good to know though.

3. Now here is where you lost me. I'll look into it.

How is m2m compared to mmal?

v4l2{,m2m} is not yet as developed as the mmal framework on the RPi, but appears to be the direction of travel both for the RPF and for the use of h/w codecs on Linux generally.

Try e.g. searching on the RPi forums for v4l2 for some further pointers:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/search.php?st=0&sk=t&sd=d&sr=posts&keywords=v4l2

Here's a nice presentation about v4l2 m2m codecs in general (slightly dated, but still a good overview):

FYI, an RPi-engineer-authored PR for 64-bit MMAL userland (with the 64-to-32-bit pointer remapping etc.) is now available for test (https://github.com/raspberrypi/userland/pull/586). So hopefully this feature will be merged shortly.
