Now I'm trying genkernel again, and I've had to use --menuconfig to deselect the 64 bit kernel and select the Intel Atom processor family, which seems to have gotten genkernel past it's fatal error. I'm going to try a full blown Initfsd kernel, and see what can happen there. Never before this have I ever needed to create one for a generated kernel, so I know nothing about them, but I suppose now is as good a time to learn as any.

On some level, creating a module kernel for a machine that I own with a fixed set of hardware seems wrong.

creighto,

Genkernel will build you a fully modular kernel with every module in the initrd.
Its a generic boot almost anywhere kernel.

If you want help to analyse your kernel panic, we need
1. The output of
Code:
lspc
i, so we can see your hardware.
2. The output of
Code:
df -hT
so we can see your filesystem types.
3. The output of
Code:
lsusb
with your USB devices connected, if you want support for them.
4. Your last manual kernel .config file. The genkernel one is not a good place to start.
This has to go to a pastebin as its far too big for a forum past.

Well, the genkernel with initrd support worked, but is really slow to boot. The periods now take up more than a full page before the boot sequence even starts, which is inconvenient for a laptop. Yet, I'm going to declare this a win and let this thread die. My next mission is to get X working, for which I may start another thread. Thank you, Ned, for all your help.
