the message goes like this:

Code:
mplayer Overproof\ Soundsystem\ -\ Nothing\ To\ Proove\ -\ 01\ Watch\ What\ You\ Put\ Inna.flac
MPlayer 1.2.1-4.9.3 (C) 2000-2016 MPlayer Team

Playing Overproof Soundsystem - Nothing To Proove - 01 Watch What You Put Inna.flac.
libavformat version 56.40.101 (external)
Audio only file format detected.
Load subtitles in ./
==========================================================================
Opening audio decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg/libavcodec audio decoders
libavcodec version 56.60.100 (external)
ADecoder init failed :(
ADecoder init failed :(
Cannot find codec for audio format 0x43614C66.
Audio: no sound
Video: no video

Exiting... (End of file)

---edit---
vlc plays this fine.
---edit---
figured out that some flacs are played by mplayer. so it got to be an issue of the provider of the flacks. i will better contact bandcamp where the flacs origin.

If you google for "mplayer audio format 0x43614C66", you can see that other peoples fixed that issue by updating ffmpeg and mplayer. If you read the doc on mplayer's website, they recommend to install mplayer from it's source code repository and to let it download the needed dependencies during its compilation.

In portage we have live ebuilds (-9999 version) for both mplayer and ffmpeg. The mplayer live ebuild use the system libraries. If you install ffmpeg-9999, it can break other packages that depends on ffmpeg. If you want an ebuild that follow the mplayer team recommendation, you can look at bug 379623. That way, you don't need to update ffmpeg, and mplayer will always be up-to-date with the latest codecs.

For what it is worth, the reason it can't play this format is that some flacs come with a ton of artist meta data in the file, like album pictures and stuff. I hear there is some way to get mplayer to use another library to play it, but what I ended up doing was just removing the metadata (because I'm never going to use it anyway). You can do that with the flac package which contains a binary called metaflac.

Code:
 metaflac --remove-all --dont-use-padding filename.flac
