Hello,

I recently had to replace a work laptop and I imported my VirtualBox Gentoo guest, but it doesn't boot. It kernel panics regarding IO-APIC:

Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + timer doesn't work!

If I pass "noapic" to the kernel via GRUB, it panics without much more information.

Is it worth troubleshooting, or should I resort to creating a new Gentoo VM?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Cheers,
Nathan Zachary

I've no experience in Virtualbox, but as your issue appears at kernel level, my 2c would be to fiddle at this level only, keeping the installed packages portage tree.
Alternatively, I would rebuild a minimal Virtualbox to which, as soon as it boot, I would migrate original portage tree environment, binary packages and additional required data.

Side note, you're not telling much about source & destination hosts.
Maybe that would be useful for some to help you with the initial kernel issue.

Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support.

Hi,
Did you change the CPU and the Kernel in the VM is "strictly" for a CPU type? For example have you set the Processor family to a specific value? In case of Intel -> AMD, are the AMD support enabled?

If I am building VMs, I keep the Kernel as generic as possible, but with the cost of lesser efficiency. This helps in the case of migration from one CPU architecture to an other.
