I've got it thoroughly botched. it's asking for passphrases for ciphers I deleted.
I just want to go back to manually typing the passwords. This keygen thing is too confusing.

Hi
Code:

PubkeyAuthentication no
PasswordAuthentication yes

Can it be that simple?

Maybe not that simple. See:
Code:
man sshd_config

For most people in /etc/ssh/sshd_config:
Code:
# Set this to 'yes' to enable PAM authentication, account processing,
# and session processing. If this is enabled, PAM authentication will
# be allowed through the ChallengeResponseAuthentication and
# PasswordAuthentication.  Depending on your PAM configuration,
# PAM authentication via ChallengeResponseAuthentication may bypass
# the setting of "PermitRootLogin without-password".
# If you just want the PAM account and session checks to run without
# PAM authentication, then enable this but set PasswordAuthentication
# and ChallengeResponseAuthentication to 'no'.
UsePAM yes

and:
Code:
#PubkeyAuthentication yes
# To disable tunneled clear text passwords, change to no here!
PasswordAuthentication no
#PermitEmptyPasswords no

It will still ask you for password because you are using PAM.

But I'm not! I managed to get PAM off my systems.

Thanks. No need for HostGator. my server id physically accessible, just inconvenient. In the basement of the same house.
