Moved from Other Things Gentoo to Gentoo Chat as it appears oriented toward discussion rather than support.

- AMD and Intel keep doing nasty stuff.
- Users: Hmm I guess I'll keep shoving more money down their throats.

Keep doing? Is this only in newer hardware since spectre/meltdown?

What do you propose as a viable alternative? A long time ago I'd hoped SPARC, POWER or PPC might have become a little more competitive on price. Or even that Cell would have turned out to be more useful. ARM for whatever reason seems to focus on low power. Perhaps because competing against x86 wouldn't be worth the economic investment.

Then there's this part from the link:
Quote:
In turn this research means that existing mitigation techniques may not be enough, there are other new vectors discovered as a result, and ARM/IBM/AMD CPUs may also be affected by Foreshadow.
I may be remembering incorrectly, but wasn't ARM also impacted by some of the other related vulnerabilities?

I think he is not arguying arm/ibm/amd were or weren't affect by previous issue.
But he is saying: the new issue has been discover and is affecting intel, but "on papers", other cpu should also be affected

Another case of scare porn likely to add yet another set of chain and ball of security "mitigations" to our machines. Our poor computers will end up running more mitigations than applications.
