Hi,

Is it possible to have plasma-nm, so networkmanager, without having it (networkmanager) started at boot and making a lot of things I don't wan't ?

I'm just happy with netifrc and wpa_supplicant, but I'd like to have a GUI to sometimes manage wifi under plasma.
But, if I install networkmanager, it starts at boot even if it isn't in the runlevel, and I don't know why.

May be can I just go with wpa_gui.

With openrc, this is definitively possible. You could even manage your network without net-misc/netifrc if you wanted too (no reason not use it unless you have specific need)

Does plasma-nm as for dependency net-misc/networkmanager ? I found NetworkManager somehow heavy, intrusive, limiting the ability to monitor and control your network... When your require special/custom need, I would go for iproute2 / netifrc

May be I could, but that's not what I'm looking for here.

You can make NetworkManager not start at boot. To do this, you need to find why it is starting, and disable those things. For openrc, check the output of /etc/init.d/NetworkManager needsme. (Note: I am guessing at the name of the init script. It may be named something else.)

However, if you do not run NetworkManager, then Plasma-NM will probably not be useful.

So we will forget it.
I'll use wpa_gui. It seems to be more than enough for me.

Thanks.

plasma-nm was developed especially as a frontend for nm and it will start nm via dbus if it is not already running. plasma-nm has no sense without nm.
