Can't believe I can't find it or see a question for it anywhere. I am sure it is just in front of my eyes. I know "emerge -S" search for descriptiond. Think the ebuild holds description, but no idea how to query s description (no equery doesn't seem to do it). so could do a fgrep DESCRIPTION /var/db/repos/gentoo/<atom> or google it each time I want to know what package does. Surely there is a better way besides putting it in a personal script or alias !?

You want the description of a package? Try
Code:
eix <package_name>

The command will print available versions, USE flags, last installation time, and the description.
Example:
Code:
eix glibc
