Hi,
I installed Gentoo with Gnome and I have no sound. I looked at the settings and it doesn't even recognize my speakers, they are connected via an analog connection (AUX). I tried to install ALSA and PulseAudio, but it didn't help.
Thanks!

I'm not a Gnome user, but in KDE my AUX devices don't show up separately. Sound is pushed to them when I select "analog output" as my sound device. This also includes the speakers on my laptop, so sometimes I have to manually lower the volume on the laptop speakers to have it just play in my headphones or external speakers.

I hope this is at least slightly helpful.

alsa-info.sh returned: https://alsa-project.org/db/?f=bb66949866d735e1aff801eb652aca443040e778

From searching online it seems I am missing a driver, maybe some knows which driver I should get? How do I check this?

Edit: OK, so when running same command on Linux Mint (Where sound works) I get https://alsa-project.org/db/?f=09c2f8dfb5d74bc8f1a9a583e82b05294530707d.
So it seems I am missiog the snd_hda_intel module, anyone knows how I should install it?

Symbol: SND_HDA_INTEL [=m]
│ Type : tristate
│ Defined at sound/pci/hda/Kconfig:11
│ Prompt: HD Audio PCI
│ Depends on: SOUND [=m] && !UML && SND [=m] && SND_PCI [=y]
│ Location:
│ -> Device Drivers
│ -> Sound card support (SOUND [=m])
│ -> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (SND [=m])
│ (1) -> HD-Audio
│ Selects: SND_HDA [=m] && SND_INTEL_DSP_CONFIG [=m]

found by typing / in menuconfig and then entering snd_hda_intel in the appearing dialog box

have you typed / in menuconfig and then entered snd_hda_intel in the appearing dialog box to view the results for your amd/gigabyte motherboard? Other than the location of SND_HDA_INTEL my results for an intel/asrock motherboard may not be helpful.

have you run?
Code:
emerge linux-firmware

Have you run lsmod in mint and ensured your kernel invokes an equivalent set of sound, snd, hda, and codec modules?

edit: oops, mint not ubuntu

I changed it directly in the ".config" file. I'll trying doing a clean compilation.

What do you mean by this?

using a text editor directly on the .config file is not recommended because the tools provided for the purpose (like make menuconfig) will hide or expose required precursor choices. The tools will automatically select required supporting choices and expose candidate follow on choices when an available choice is made. A simple text editor will not be aware of nor responsive to dependencies in the kernel configuration.

You can follow the exposed dependency chain using the help dialogs found by entering < Help > choice in menuconfig.

running lsmod in ubuntu should show a list of all modules in use. as sound works for you in ubuntu that list is likely to include the modules that would be required for sound in gentoo. running lsmod after booting your installed gentoo should show a list of all modules in use by gentoo. names of modules required for sound will generally include sound, snd, hda or codec; possibly others that I fail to recall.

Ok, thanks, I will try to make a clean install.
I ran
Code:
make menuconfig

configured it and then ran
Code:
make all clean

this should be fine right? I won't need to actually update my kernel with
Code:
make install

right?
If this won't work I'll compare lsmod on Gentoo and Mint.
Appreciate the Help!

You need to install and use your new kernel. Otherwise the changes will not affect your system. So make sure you compile and run make install (make sure your boot partition is mounted and if you use efi copy it into the right place) and then reboot.

That didn't work... I got 2 .ko files, one snd-hda-intel.ko and the other had a simillar name, both of them couldn't be loaded with the error:

edit2: By running
Code:

Still no sound though (Only Dummy device options to choose). It seems I couldn't load snd-hda-intel because I needed to first load other modules, and now I can load them, still this didn't fix the issue.

edit3: This is what I get from runnning alsa-info.sh again https://alsa-project.org/db/?f=d9c155c496b8e46040fb9f7629a70d79100c70ca, so it seems like snd-hda-intel is still not loaded in alsa for some reason...
Also I get lots of
Code:
snd_hda_intel: Unknown symbol azx_probe_codecs (err -2)

With different kind of symbols...

I think you're missing CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK
Enable that one and try again, it should work.

gentle reminder/recommendation about kernel building (replace the _ in "eselect kernel set _" with a number)
Code:
eselect kernel list
eselect kernel set _
cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
make && make modules_install && make install

appears make modules_install got left out

I got it working, I changed with make menuconfig from "M" to "*" in most sound drivers and it fixed it. Thanks everyone!
