I have a Gigabyte aero 15 oled, only problem is brightness control of the panel since its oled, which is not very linux friendly right now. I've read some threads about making it work (specially on lenovo x1). Everything else is perfect, battery last longer , about 6hs, vs 3,5hs in windows.

i have a thinkpad x1 carbon and they work pretty well, mostly intel hardware. Had no issues with gentoo (i also tried freebsd) although i never tried hibernation.

Not sure whether my question belongs on this topic, but... What hardware components have most impact during Gentoo's maintenance, such as portage operations and software compilation?

I guess I should buy a laptop comprising 4 gb RAM at least, preferrably 8 or more. How about the CPU? Is there a big difference for example between Intel's i5 and i7 processors in terms of dependency calculation and compilation time measures?

How about AMD these days?

When reading Wikipedia's lists of Intel/AMD processors, what specs should I pay more attention to?

Thanks

I wouldn't worry much about compiling upgrades. It's not like you're going to be sitting there waiting on them -- just run them in the background. I can emerge firefox successfully on an intel core2 with 2Gb of memory.

I've been loving my amd ryzens. They haven't given me any problems, but I can only compare them to my four-plus-year-old intel processors, which probably isn't helpful.

I happened to come across the following video when down the YouTube rabbit hole recently:

Why i will never buy a Lenovo laptop! - G50-80 motherboard repair

OK, the G50-80 is one of the Lenovo budget laptops, but it has made me wary of the new ThinkPads from Lenovo. Does anyone know whether the poor design mentioned in the above YouTube video is also present in Lenovo ThinkPads?
