Been trying to install for a week, now. between the docs being incorrect and the key server thing, it's been a nightmare and I'm ready to punt in favor of devuan.

l
Code:
ivecd / # grub-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
grub-install: error: /boot doesn't look like an EFI partition.
(chroot) livecd / # grub-install  --directory=/boot
grub-install: error: /boot/modinfo.sh doesn't exist. Please specify --target or --directory.
(chroot) livecd / # grub-install  --directory=/usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi/modinfo.sh
grub-install: error: /usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi/modinfo.sh/modinfo.sh doesn't exist. Please specify --target or --directory.
(chroot) livecd / # grub-install  --directory=/usr/lib/grub/x86_64-efi/
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
grub-install: error: cannot find EFI directory.
(chroot) livecd / # grub-install  --directory=/usr/lib/grub
grub-install: error: /usr/lib/grub/modinfo.sh doesn't exist. Please specify --target or --directory.

Can somebody give me a clue? Grub has always been a mystery. this is not an efi system. It's not even set up the way I want it. (hate ext4 and LVM what a kludge) never got the option to set up BTRFS on the root. meh. really getting discouraged here. It shouldn't be this difficult. I have 25 years of Linux experience. I even used to run Gentoo all the time. Now it's impossible to install.

This is not an EFI system, but you are telling GRUB to install for EFI? Confusing. :?

Solved the trouble.

emerge --unmerge grub:2

edit the /etc/portage/make.conf and remove the x86_efi line the instructions told me to add.

emerge grub:2

grub-install /dev/sda

worked.
