In the German subforum there's a discussion subforum. Didn't find this in the international part. But I think it's an interesting topic, how the rest of the world ticks.

I remembered the time, when Apple introduced the flat-design. Looked a little bit strange. But after some time we got to get familiar with it. In Android the put tiles around the icons. Strange… But the Microsoft took the cake. When I started at work for the first time Visual Studio 2013 and look at rarely distinguishable icons and capital characters in the menu. Simply awful. Both things break every known usability rule.

I like KDE. It was always a design highlight. But then they came with the Breeze theme - as the default icon theme  Fortunately it took quite a short time, until the Oxygen theme was ported to KDE5.

Today I updated my systems. Libreoffice has never been a beauty. But with the last update, they worked hard to get even more ugly. Now the provide the following designs:

  • Breeze: is almost as beautiful as Geos.
  • Galaxy: Yes, we have reached Windows 95.
  • Slfr: Geos in bold font design.
  • Tango: The early days of Gnome.
  • Oxygen: The only beautiful theme. Light, bright, elegant. The only icon theme, which was looking good in Libreoffice in the last 15 years (including Open Office). But what do the guys of Libre Office do? The remove it!

Why do they torment us? Should I create a patch with the Oxygen Iconset to re-include it by a USE-Flag?

Welcome to the world of touchscreens: 'flat', bland icons lacking in detail that you tap. As for monchrome icons, I blame Microsoft (Windows 7, wasn't it?)! Colour adds an extra level of information and improves the speed of recognition, and I much prefer coloured icons to monochrome icons. Mind you, there are plenty of people who like monochrome icons.
