I am looking for a printer that:

1. Uses driver-agnostic protocols.
2. Supports wired networking for both printing and scanning.
3. Isn't pure and utter shit.

Stay away from Brother. They are pure and utter shit. Particularly when it comes to the Web-based configuration interface.

No idea.

The last time I looked for a printer I had 2 requirements :

1. Be wireless (wife & daughter print more than I do).

2. Color laser.

I'm done with non-laser printers. Ink is a ripoff and the quality of the printing sucks in comparison.

When I was shopping for it, I just googled every model I saw that looked decent and read many reviews of each. I ended up with an HP. Mind you, I'll never buy an HP laptop... and my desktops I build from components. But their printers are decent.

So, my advice, look on Newegg or Amazon, check the various models, google, read reviews, and then make a choice.

It comes to something when its cheaper to buy a new printer, than to refill with branded cartridges.

Even non-branded aren't cheap, I don't print that much and I use a refill kit.

I bought an on sale (hp 1120n mfp) HP (scanner+printer+network) black/white laser printer. Wife can still print wireless through the wifi. Printing works just fine, scanning has it's quirks in linux. 7 years old now, never had to refill it so far.

Laser only:

Brother Printers are decent.

Samsung isn't too shabby, but after a couple thousand pages it becomes very picky about the paper.

HP, 1320 still rules supreme. The rest is more meh than anything. I have seen too many HP laser printers with fucked up firmwares and no way to get them to behave again. The cartridge prizes are atrocious.

Rest: no first hand experience.

Ink:
Canon: DO NOT BUY
Epson: DO NOT BUY, or: buy a new one every 2000 sheets.
Lexmark: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO NOT BUY
HP: THEY ARE ALL GARBAGE NOW. DO NOT BUY

rest: no first hand experience

Please define exactly what you mean by best printers.

If you mean excellent print quality, then look for a laser printer and maybe with inbuilt network print server.

If you mean a printer that will last you 10 years, I'm afraid they stopped making those.

My Brother printer from ~2003/04 is awesome. Not a single problem with it.

That said, I never tried to interact with it through a web connection. Do you know that to still be a problem with current models?

Without compelling quantifiable support for another brand, I'd have a difficult time randomly picking something else.

well, the three we currently use at work are decent. Good quality. Sturdy. Easy. They just work.

But I do not buy printers who cost less than 200€ so maybe on the cheaper end they suck.

That could be. At the time, my printer was probably $300US, before a small discount if I recall correctly.

Brother seems to be the highest recommended everywhere I have seen. Unfortunately some people think their laser printers claim the toner is out before it actually is. There's a modification you can make to the toner cartridge but this probably voids the warranty and Brother does not recommend it. Personally I would listen to them, they must be smart people to run such a successful business!

Your brother is a lucky man. Hope he gets to keep his printer for another 14 years.

If you want a printer that'll last 10 years, buy one that's been used for 10 years.

I have to do occasional family tech support for a Kodak... ugh.

The best printer is no printer. What do you actually use it for?
